Yes, it does accept cryptocurrencies as a payment method.
It’d be weird for them not to, as they’re a digital marketplace, right?
Still, since crypto is unregulated and it’s a fresh thing, there is also potential for some major fraud here.
And since g2a’s reputation is pretty much bad, people look for ways to hurt the company somehow. This is a fertile ground for scams of all sort, but they hurt those trying to scam g2a instead.
Not sure if this particular fraud is still a thing or not, but there was a bunch of fake videos which stated that they found a loophole in g2a’s security systems or something. You could get free games simply by using something dubbed the g2a time zone hack.
The way this thing was supposed to work was as follows: you buy a game on g2a using bitcoins, but before that you change the system date to a far future. G2a’s systems will then discover a discrepancy and make a refund. The transaction will, however, proceed as planned and you’ll get a free game as a result. No one will see this happening, like at all, ever.
The thing is that in order to achieve this effect, you need to download a plugin called Tampermonkey and install a script that is supposed to work all the magic here.
Needless to say, this is not how it works.
All this script does is replace the target wallet with the one belonging to the scammer. This way the bitcoins end up in the thief’s pocket instead. So, no scamming g2a, you’d get scammed instead, fooled by videos and comments promising that this method works.
I just hope not too many folks fell for that. These financial losses weren’t probably huge (but whoever used this “trick” probably felt a sting). Long story short, only buy stuff on g2a and without any external links or browser plugins.
And if you need more explanations, this article, coming from one of g2a’s employees, talks about this issue in greater detail.
And if you think “hey, I’m gonna use this method to scam g2a, they’re thieves, anyway, so they deserve it,” well, I got bad news for you: the only one who deserves to be robbed here is yourself. G2a hurting devs and stuff like that has already been debunked numerous times. All that stems from the fact that people probably don’t understand how gaming marketplaces operate and just repeat what they’ve heard online without actually thinking if it makes any sense or not.
